    User Generated Auto Stupidity

Ah, this is too funny to be true and yet...

It seems that there is a niche of people who film their car speedometer's  as they drive way too fast.
Well one of these gents who filmed himself doing 130mph in his Honda Prelude in the UK did not expect that Scotland Yard would be monitoring the Intertubes and would use said video to suspend his driving privileges for 4 months. The whole thing was reported by the BBC and it seems that law enforcement is using the user video sites to catch law-breakers.  So watch out all you dimestore Lex Luthor's, big bro is watching.

The speeding video that got the perp is below.

    CGM Makes People Buy Stuff

Talkback I wanted to like this article and thought it was going to offer some insights, and in fact it did, but not what I thought. I thought it would talk about how when people saw user commercials and negative commentary that people responded. In fact, it discusses how online travel and auto are often influenced by what people read in blogs, message boards and consumer reviews. So I guess the question I have is..."what is consumer media?" - If i write how I like brand x on a message board, is that considered CGM? If anything I would say it is Op-Ed.

The Internet does a great job of allowing consumer talk-back and encourages research so we make better decisions, and for that reason alone the products and services need to get better because bad experiences travel quicker and farther than ever before. But, if all consumer input is classified as CGM, it dilutes the category and makes it into an unmanageable beast. I look at CGM as consumers creating their own media communications in the formats we expect to see media, not commentary.

    Design A Ride

Getting consumers to design your ads? Why not have them design your cars as well?

Philly Car Share- Philadelphia's non-profit answer to Zipcar has developed an innovative promotion where they are letting consumers "Pimp Our Ride". For a month, the winning design will be made into a custom car wrap for a Scion XB and be available for rental and driven around the city. While some apparel and toy companies have allowed their fans to get into designing their products, this is a new spin for a brand you would not expect to get in the CGM game. The result? An great way to connect with your local community, some innovative design work and a good amount of buzz.
